People Get Happier as They Age

At the 117th Annual Convention of the American Psychological Association recently , Dr Susan Turk Charles PhD of the University of California Irvine presented a review of studies on aging & happiness. She found, in a study of people aged up to their mid-90s, that the mental wellbeing of most individuals improve with age, except people with dementia. They found that older adults generally make the best of the time they have left and have learned how to avoid situations that make them feel sad or stressed. Young people should learn from the old & do the same.

Older people have greater emotional control than younger people, so the older you get, the more likely you are to:-

Many older people lead healthy, active lives enriched by experience & learning. It is most important to accept that, just because someone is getting older, it doesn't mean he or she no longer has a significant contribution to make.

Dr Charles' work is based on work by Dr Laura Castensen, a psychological professor at Stanford University whose hypothesis is that as people age, they become increasingly aware that the time they have left in life is getting shorter. As a result of this, they want to make the best of it by avoiding situations that will make them unhappy. As they have experienced more of life, they have had more time to learn and understand the intentions of others which help them avoid stressful situations.

For many people, older age is often looked upon with dread and worry. This ain't necessarily so. Essentially, the first world is an aging world. In the UK alone, it is expected that there will be 30,000 over 100 years old by the year 2030.

As we cannot escape aging, what today's younger people can learn from this:-

  1. Start preparing for your old age now by charting ways to thoroughly enjoy the years ahead. Imagine living to be a happy & healthy 100 year old person,
  2. Design a healthy daily routine to reinforce this goal,
  3. Invest socially outside the workplace & family home. Cultivate your interests.
